A President Willing to Knowingly Break the Law

IT IS PROBABLY A SAFE BET to say that most supporters of the “March on Washington” on January 6, 2021, had no idea that some of the participants among them had an actual plan to “storm” the Capitol, armed with weaponry, and attempt to physically prevent the certification of Joe Biden as president. Most thought it was just a way of showing support for the political figure they believed best served their interests.

Donald Trump, of course, had them all believing that there had been massive voter fraud. These unwitting supporters believed, therefore, that they were fighting for election integrity, never conceiving in their wildest imaginings, one may surmise, that hundreds would force their way into the Capitol and wreck the place as they did.

This surprised them.

In turn, the whole world looked on surprised…and horrified by what occurred on January 6th.

Those who fomented the insurrection and the attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of power must now answer to the American people and explain their actions. Many have already been to court and find themselves in prison. Most recently a man named Mark Mazza pleaded guilty to carrying a weapon on the Capitol grounds and assaulting a police officer with a stolen baton. He also admitted that if he had found Nancy Pelosi that day that he would be in court for a different reason. The inference, of course, is that he would have killed her. An FBI informant also revealed that the Proud Boys were indeed out to murder Vice President Pence.

What is most unsettling beyond these admissions is that the ringleader of the insurrection, Donald Trump, was a president who was willing to break the law despite being told by his own counsel in no uncertain terms that what he was wanting to do was illegal. Trump didn’t care. He was determined to remain in power no matter what.

Perhaps he was as desperate as he was because he knew that once he lost the protection of being the president, he was in deep trouble legally anyway. Being out of office for him meant that he was vulnerable. He knew that without the shield of the presidency, his situation would be the equivalent of trying to run a gauntlet of legal proceedings that would all go against him.

He is not stupid, after all, just duplicitous.

Now he is on the verge of being indicted for his role in his own contrived travesty against American democracy.

The trial of the century is sure to follow.

For those who want to watch the ultimate version of Reality TV, they shall soon have their day on the tube.

Events have spiraled out of control for Donald Trump. He thinks he will be the Republican nominee for president in 2024.

He is wrong.

Donald Trump will be indicted and made to pay the price for his treasonous dereliction of duty as president. The end is near for the simple reason that if the DOJ does not indict, then it also will be guilty of a dereliction of duty.

Merrick Garland knows that and so do millions and millions of us.

As any average, ordinary lawbreaker knows: You do the crime, you do the time.

Trump is not above the law as he believes.

He did the crime. Now he must pay the price.
